If you only want a dog/pet for your family, and don’t have the time or the desire to take your dog running or on long walks or biking or even to get involved in agility (obstacle course) activities, then this may not be the dog for you.

German shepherds were bred as working dogs and need to work/play at activities to keep their bodies and mind active and challenged.

You could even try your hand at agility training. It’s great fun, and extremely good for your dog!

And, you do have to train your dog! If not, you will be at constant battle with him, one way or another. A trained dog is a friend and companion for life.

The Australian Shepherd has its origin in North America were it was developed during the nineteenth century. It is not entirely sure where the “Australian” came from. The English Shepherd, Dorset Blue Shag, Cumberland Sheepdog, Scottish Collie, Glenwherry Collie, Bouvier des Flandres, and the Welsh Sheepdog were all breeds that were used to develop the Australian Shepherd.

One more reason to train your dog…I take my two dogs walking every day, sometimes 2-3 times a day. And, once in a while I come across a lady walking a German Shepherd, and she looks like she is holding unto him with all her strength. I am so afraid that if she falls, or lets go, this dog will run over to eat mine.

What’s some of the info included in the German Shepherd Handbook?

The German Shepherd is a very active and strong dog, and if you are fortunate enough to own one of these beautiful pets, you already know that.

Shepherds, as most dogs, need lots of exercise, both mentally and physically. They are very smart, extremely bold, and sometimes even stubborn.

Make sure that your dog is a happy, adjusted and behaved member of your family. German Shepherds must have training because they are also naturally dominant dogs. If you do not control him, he will control you and run your household.

German Shepherds can be a variety of colours, the most common of which are the tan/black and red/black varieties. Both varieties have black masks and saddles. Rarer variations include the sable, all-black, all-white, liver and blue varieties. The all-black variety is acceptable; however, the blue and liver are considered to be serious faults and the all-white is grounds for instant disqualification in some standards.[18] This is because the white coat is more visible, making the dog a poor guard dog, and harder to see in conditions such as snow or when herding sheep.

“Guest Blogger”…

Many people might not know this, but the German Shepherd actually has 2 layers of fur to protect its body. And it is surprisingly easier to take care of than expected. The first layer of the covering which is close to the body is close-knit and soft. It provides the German Shepherd with protection, acting as a thermal coat to maintain warmth during colder months and protects it from the harmful rays of the sun during the warm seasons. The second coat of the German Shepherd, the outer coat is rougher and of a medium length.
