There are a variety of ways dogs try to show they are dominant, such as placing their own head over the other dogs, or by putting their paws on top of the other dog’s shoulder area. As they become more aggressive they will raise the hackles on their back, growl and show off their teeth. Try to make sure this stage of aggression doesn’t get a chance to happen. • You can take your aggressive dog on a trip to visit a friend of yours, whose dog happens to be friendly and non-aggressive. If you have a male dog, I’d strongly suggest starting this “friend” training with a female dog. It is also a good idea either at your friend’s place or in a neutral territory like a park, so your dog doesn’t feel like he is protecting his turf.

• By keeping both of the dogs on leashes, you retain control in case the dogs react aggressively.  Have the dogs take the sit position far enough away from each other that they cannot touch. If your dog is acting aggressive, remind him who’s the boss, and make sure he stays in the sit position. Give your dog praise and a reward once he has stopped his aggression and calmed down- be sure to let him know you are happy with his calm behavior. Be consistent with your training so your results are fast and also consistent. Be sure not to yell at your dog, a that just emphasizes a negative attitude.

• Dogs greet each other first by sniffing each other’s faces, so as long as they are calm it is time to let them say “Hi”. Because the dogs are calm they should now greet each other without the displays of dominance and aggressive posture such as growling or raising the hair on their backs. If your dog is still calm at this point you have already begun stopping dog on dog aggression in your pet.

• For future meetings, try using different locations to check the aggressive dog’s attitude. Repeated meetings with the other dog will eventually desensitize your dog from his aggressive response to seeing another dog.

• After the dogs seem like they have become comfortable around each other, the last test would be to have a meeting in your dog’s home territory. Start the final test with the dogs on the leash, just in case the aggressive dog cops an attitude on his home turf. If your dog does remain calm, then it is OK to unleash them and let them play together. What a relief it is to see your dog stop that bad aggressive attitude with other dogs, and actually having fun like a normal dog should.
