Walking With Your German Shepherd

Your shepherd will not know that going out for a walk is “exercise time”. Dogs do not know about that. He looks at it more as going out for an old fashioned “run”. He will look around for potential hunted food (like squirrels), he will sniff for other dogs, pack members, look for prey, and of course, just hang out with the pack. So, his view of a walk, is food, comfort of pack, and even mental exercise with the rest of the pack. That’s a German shepherd’s version of a walk.


German Shepherds are not slow walkers by nature. They lope more than walk. So, if possible, try to walk at a pretty fast clip, at least, drop the “slow” part. You can even jog with your shepherd, but, just make sure his age, and his health are up to it.
